Corset Bulletin
Corsets have been used as a
fashion item by both women and men for quite
some time going back several centuries. The
shapes formed by the various construction
methods have been changing and so have the
materials and types of items used. In order
to develop the best shape for you, you might
be better informed if you have an
understanding of the materials and items you
can use in today's marketplace.
Body Shaping and Corsets - The Perfect
Match
The oldest created corsets are typically the
ones with a moderate amount of curves or
reshaping. The breasts tend to be flattened and
their shape diminished. To attain this profile
you have to contain the general shape and
curves of a female's body.
Busks, Boning and Other Corset Facts
A great corset design depends on two main
factors: a) the properties and type of boning
material used. and b) the tightening level
allowed by the lacing. To ensure you are
comfortable while wearing your corset you
should only tighten and lace up so much, you
can rely on the boning material to deliver the
remainder of the support.
A good choice in boning material is steel
covered with nylon that is typically a light
color and is found in different length,
thickness, and widths. When you select a spring
steel for the corset you choose the "thickness"
is more important than the width. Spring steel,
when it is of the proper thickness it is
somewhat flexible but is quite difficult to
bend.
You can construct a corset with busks that
open and are often used on the front of corsets
to enable you to slip into and out of your
corset unassisted. The busks were created in
the 1860's and began with straight busks, the
more complicated spoon busk was developed in
the 1870's. Any of these corsets can be found
in our corset superstore.
