Corset Lowdown
Corsets have been used as a
fashion item by both men and women for
centuries. The shapes formed by the various
construction methods have been able to be
modernized similar to the updating of the
items and materials used. If you are trying
to reproduce the shape you covet, you need
to have an education of the types of
materials used in today's corsets.
Body Shaping Corsets
The corsets from earlier times have usually
been those with the least amount of reshaping.
The breasts look to be constrained and their
shape diminished. To attain this profile you
have to contain the general shape and curves of
a female's body.
Busks, Boning and Other Corset Facts
A great corset design depends on two main
factors: a) the properties and type of boning
material used. and b) the tightening level
allowed by the lacing. To feel comfortable in
your corset you should only tighten and lace up
so much, you can rely on the boning material to
deliver the remainder of the support.
A good choice in boning material is steel
covered with nylon that is typically a light
color and is found in different length,
thickness, and widths. When you select a spring
steel for the corset you choose the thickness,
and not the width, should be of primary
importance. You can tell when you have selected
the proper spring steel boning because it is
pliable but it is really hard to bend.
You can sometimes find busk fasteners that
open and are often used on the front of corsets
to enable you to put on and take off your
corset without calling someone in for help. The
busks made their debut around 1860 and
initiated with a very simple busk, the more
complicated spoon busk was developed in the
1870's. These corsets call all be found in our
