Corset Background
There has been corset worship by both
sexes for quite some time going back several
centuries. The shapes formed by the various
construction methods have been able to be
modernized and so have the basic types of
items used. If you are trying to reproduce
the shape you covet, you should have
knowledge of the materials and items you can
use in today's marketplace.
Using Corsets to Shape the Body
The oldest created corsets are typically the
ones with the least amount of shape or curves.
The breasts tend to be significantly pressed
down and deliver the appearance of a minimal
breast silhouhette. To develop this shape you
have to constrain and work against the natural
shape and curves of a woman's body.
Corset Fabrication With Busks and
Boning
A great corset design depends on two main
factors: a) the strength and other factors of
the boning material, and b) the ability to
tighten the lacing. In order for the corset to
fit you comfortably you are capable of lacing
up only so much, you should rely on the boning
material to provide the rest of the structural
support.
A good boning material is spring steel
coated in nylon that provides a light color
base and comes in a group of thicknesses,
widths, and lengths. When you are looking to
select steel boning for your favorite corset
style the thickness is of primary importance.
When the correct thickness of spring steel is
used it is flexible but it is very hard to
bend.
You can use busks that open and are
sometimes used on the front of corsets to allow
you to put on your corset and take off your
corset by yourself. The busk type fasteners
were invented around 1860 and began with
straight busks, the elaborate and intricate
spoon busk was invented a decade later. The
entire collection of thse corsets can be found
